First Descent in Nepal
September 17th, 2006During the first week of September, Andreas Sommer lead an international team of paddlers to the Baudha Mountain within the Manaslu Himal in Nepal. The aim was the Dharaundi River, a IV/V river still unexplored in the center of Nepal. The successfull descent took seven days including the walk in. Rain hindered the approach to the higher areas which will still give plenty of whitewater for interested parties to explore. Photos will be update here within the next few days upon the return of Andreas Sommer and crew. The kayakteam was made up by Ram Bhandari (NP), Georgia Le Plastrier (AUS), Aaron Hemmerle (AUS) and Andreas Sommer (GER). The discovered river itself is a medium volume (September) river with high gradient in it’s upper reaches and very continous rapids. Starting point was Rangrung but we scouted another days walk higher (shombhu khola) which will be V/VI at the give flow. Upon estimates, the river will be at it’s best during the last week of September with grand views of the Manaslu Mountain Massif and challenging but controlable waterlevels and difficulty.
